WHAT DO I DO WITH SIDE EFFECTS LISTS?

You can memorize the lists, but what you need to do is think about how they apply to your patient.

Examples

"Vision Problems"

What can happen when a patient can't see as well as usual? 

  • Falls.
  • Car accidents.
  • Taking the wrong medication.
  • Failing to notice jaundice, cyanosis, hair loss, etc.
  • What else?

"Photosensitivity"

What can happen when a patient is unaware of risk of photosensitivity?

  • Sunburn.

"Fatigue"

What can happen when a patient  is unusually tired?

  • Missing med times.
  • Failing to perform ADLs, hygiene.
  • Missing work/school.
  • Missing medical appointments.

"Weight gain"

What can happen when a patient  puts on weight?

  • Elevated blood glucose.
  • Difficulty with wound healing.
  • Polydipsia-Patient could dilute electrolytes, which could lead to coma, MI, seizure, etc.
  • Polyphagia-Patient is eating more and has increased risk of choking.
  • Polyuria-A particular problem for the bedridden as skin could often be moist and develop breakdown.
  • Joint pain.
  • Sleep apnea.
